Madrid's great avenue was opened from 1910 by demolishing more than 300 buildings, and its 1.3 kilometres sum up the architecture of the 20th century: the Metrópolis building and its dome topped by the Winged Victory, the Telefónica building, which was the first skyscraper in Europe, the Capitol building with its Schweppes sign, and the musical theatres that have earned it the name 'Madrid's Broadway'.
