Corominas Prehistoric Necropolis
The Corominas Prehistoric Necropolis is an archaeological site around 5,000 years old, located in San Isidro Labrador Park, in the Los Pedregales area of Estepona. It is the first documented megalithic cemetery on the Costa del Sol, with five very well-preserved dolmens and several Bell Beaker-period burials. It was discovered in 2001 during environmental impact works ahead of the construction of the Costa del Sol toll motorway, and excavated between 2001 and 2002. Given the uniqueness of the finds and their good state of preservation, the five dolmens were dismantled and relocated to an underground interpretation centre built beneath a mound that recreates megalithic funerary architecture. Inside, the topography of the site has been reconstructed, including the five dolmens in their original positions, and the materials found in the tombs are on display: ceramic vessels, arrowheads, polished axes, personal ornaments, necklace beads and perforated seashells, as well as a gold spiral. Visits are guided, require advance booking and last around an hour and a quarter; a raised walkway allows visitors to view the dolmens from above, with panels and display cases explaining the discovery, the research and funerary practices.
