Statue of the Mariblanca
The Mariblanca is a white marble Venus that came from Florence to Madrid in 1625, brought by the dealer Ludovico Turqui on commission from Gil Imón de la Mota. It crowned the fountain of the Puerta del Sol, which Pedro de Ribera rebuilt in 1726. In 1838 it moved to the Plaza de las Descalzas Reales, in 1892 to a municipal warehouse, and between 1912 and 1969 it stood in the Retiro and then on the Paseo de Recoletos. After suffering vandalism in 1984, it was restored and kept in the Casa de la Villa. The one seen today in the square is a limestone replica, 1.70 metres tall, made from a mould of the original by the restorer Jerónimo García Gallego. It was placed on 25 September 2009 at the start of Calle del Arenal, during the latest renovation of the Puerta del Sol.
