Montjuïc Castle
Montjuïc Castle crowns Montjuïc hill, above the port of Barcelona. The first fortification dates from 1640, during the revolt against Philip IV, and it became a castle with new bastions in 1694. Its present form is mainly due to the reforms of the engineer Juan Martín Cermeño from 1751, with cisterns, kitchens and a moat; by the end of the 18th century it had about 120 cannons. It was a prison and a place of executions: on 15 October 1940 Lluís Companys, president of the Generalitat, was shot here. It was a military museum and, since 2007, Barcelona City Council has taken over its management. Today it has an interpretation centre with four spaces and a moat with places of remembrance. You reach it by cable car and funicular from the city.
