At Leipzig Zoo, visitors explore six themed worlds recreating natural habitats, such as the Founder's Garden, Asia, Africa, South America, Pongoland and Gondwanaland. In Gondwanaland, a large covered tropical rainforest, you can walk along elevated walkways among squirrel monkeys and explore the exotic vegetation of Africa, Asia and South America, as well as observe uncommon animals such as the eastern quoll; it is also possible to take a small boat ride to see the area from another perspective. Pongoland houses gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans in spacious enclosures, and has a research centre studying the behaviour and cognition of great apes in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute. In the Kiwara savannah, within the African area, you can see Grévy's zebras, Rothschild's giraffes, Thomson's gazelles, Nile lechwe and ostriches sharing space, alongside lions, hyenas and meerkats. The Asian area is notable for its pool for Indian elephants, visible from an underground gallery, and for its Chinese pangolin, a critically endangered species.
