The Casa de los Pinelo is a palace on Calle Abades, in the heart of Seville's historic centre. Its construction was begun in the early 16th century by the canon Jerónimo Pinelo, son of the Genoese banker Francisco Pinelo, factor of the Casa de la Contratación de Indias. After his death, the building passed to the Cathedral Chapter, which used it as housing for the clergy until the confiscation of church property in 1855; afterwards it had uses as varied as a school, a mule-hire business or a printing type foundry, and between 1885 and the 1950s it operated as a guesthouse. It was declared a National Monument in 1954 and became municipal property in 1966. Its main courtyard preserves Carrara marble columns carved in Genoa around 1540, arcades with Plateresque plasterwork and Mudéjar and Renaissance wooden ceilings. Since 1980 it has been the seat of the Real Academia Sevillana de Buenas Letras and of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría, which keeps a collection of Oriental art there.
