Notre-Dame Cathedral stands on the Île de la Cité, surrounded by the River Seine, in Paris. The building is notable for its pioneering use of rib vaulting and flying buttresses, its huge, colourful rose windows and its abundant sculptural decoration. Inside, it preserves Gothic, Baroque and nineteenth-century sculptures, altarpieces from the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, and relics such as the Crown of Thorns and a fragment and a nail from the True Cross. It also houses three pipe organs, one of them historic, and large bells.
