Church of the Calatravas
The Concepción Real de Calatrava, known as the church of the Calatravas, is at number 25 Calle de Alcalá, a few steps from the Puerta del Sol. It was part of a convent founded in 1623 and the church was built between 1670 and 1678. It has a Latin cross plan with a transept and a dome on an octagonal drum with eight windows. The facade was remodelled in the time of Isabella II, with neo-Renaissance elements and a reddish terracotta tone that sets it apart on the street. Inside, the main altarpiece stands out, the work of José Benito de Churriguera between 1720 and 1724, with sculptures by Pablo González Velázquez. The complex also includes a museum with liturgical ornaments and historic objects, which can be seen on guided tours. As it is a church in use, it is advisable to respect services and opening hours.
