Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty is a colossal 46-metre-tall copper sculpture on Liberty Island, in New York Harbor. Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with an internal structure by Gustave Eiffel, it was a gift from France to the United States, unveiled on 28 October 1886. The figure represents the Roman goddess Libertas, wearing a crown with seven points, holding a torch in her right hand and a tablet bearing the date of the Declaration of Independence in her left. Visitors arrive by ferry from Battery Park (Manhattan) or Liberty State Park (New Jersey) and can walk through the island's gardens, visit the Statue of Liberty Museum — home to the original torch — and, with advance booking, climb up to the pedestal or the crown via 377 steps. On the pedestal is a bronze plaque bearing Emma Lazarus's sonnet 'The New Colossus'. The monument has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984 and receives around 3.8 million visitors a year.
