Singapore Botanic Gardens
An 82-hectare garden on Cluny Road, founded on its present site in 1859 by the Agri-horticultural Society and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015. It has three lakes: Swan Lake, dug in 1866, Symphony Lake and Eco-Lake. It preserves about six hectares of primary rainforest with dipterocarp species, older than the garden itself. It was here that Henry Ridley promoted rubber cultivation from plants that arrived from Kew in 1877. The National Orchid Garden, of about three hectares, holds more than a thousand species and two thousand hybrids and is the only part you pay for. Next to it is the Ginger Garden, from 2003, with plants of the ginger family and a waterfall. The 18-hectare Learning Forest was completed in 2018. There is also a Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage and several galleries.
