Church of Notre-Dame de Versailles

CultureVisit: ~30 minFree

This is the parish church of Louis XIV's Versailles, not the cathedral (that title belongs to Saint-Louis). It was commissioned by the king and designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in the classical style: the first stone was laid in 1684 and it was consecrated in 1686 to Our Lady of the Assumption. As the parish of the palace and its royal chapel, it recorded the baptisms, weddings and burials of the royal family. During the Revolution it was looted and turned into a Temple of Reason in 1793; in 1802 the cross on the dome was restored. In the 19th century the Sacred Heart chapel was added (1858-1873). It has been protected as a historic monument since 2005. Among its works are a marble Christ of 1690 by Laurent Magnier and the funerary monument of the Count of Vergennes. The Abbé de l'Épée, a pioneer of deaf education, was baptised here. The façade faces rue Hoche.
