A wall that encircles Seoul's historic centre, built from 1396 on the orders of King Taejo, founder of the Joseon dynasty, to protect the capital. It is about 18.6 kilometres long and rises and falls over four mountains: Baegaksan, Naksan, Namsan and Inwangsan. It preserves stretches of stone and historic gates such as Heunginjimun, known as Dongdaemun. It can be walked in sections, with views of the city.
