Basilica of Santa Prassede
CultureVisit: ~30 min
Church in the Monti rione, a step from Santa Maria Maggiore, begun around 780 by Pope Adrian I and decorated by Paschal I around 828. It holds one of the best-preserved ensembles of 9th-century Byzantine mosaics in Rome: the apse with Christ between St Peter and St Paul, the triumphal arch and the Chapel of St Zeno, mausoleum of Paschal's mother. The Vallombrosan Benedictines have looked after it since 1198.
