Sanzen-in
Tendai temple in the village of Ōhara, north of Kyoto, and one of the five monzeki of the school, whose head priests were members of the imperial family. It began as a hermitage founded by Saichō when he established Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei, and took its present name in 1871. Ōhara has been known for more than a thousand years as Gyozan and as the cradle of shōmyō, Buddhist sutra chanting. In the grounds are the Ōjō Gokuraku-in hall, the Goten-mon gate, the Yuseien and Shuhekien gardens, the hall of the golden Fudō (Konjiki Fudō) and the Warabe-jizō statues. Among the important cultural properties are a seated Amida triad and a painting of Amida welcoming the twenty-five bodhisattvas. The temple's five seals can be stamped in the Konjiki Fudō hall. Autumn reaches Ōhara about a week earlier than central Kyoto.
