La Ereta Park
Urban park of almost seven hectares on the slope of Mount Benacantil, next to Santa Bárbara Castle. A 1.6 km circular trail, with flights of steps and gradients of up to 20%, goes round the site in about an hour and links the 18th-century Ermita de Santa Cruz, the powder magazine, the Water Garden and the Garrigós wells, which house the Alicante Water Museum. The route gives access to the castle wall and offers panoramas of the old town, San Nicolás Cathedral, the port and the Mediterranean, as well as the rocky profile known as the Moor's face. The vegetation includes Mediterranean species such as orange trees, oleanders, pines, rosemary and Spanish broom, and in elevated spots such as the Colina Alta viewpoint you can watch birds gliding. The park has information panels, an online audio guide, a semi-underground room for contemporary art and a restaurant in the upper area with views. There are entrances from Plaza del Puente, the Sant Jordi threshold and Avenida Jaime II, with adapted sections up to Plaza de La Ereta.
