Wall Street

Wall Street is an eight-block street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, running between Broadway and South Street, alongside the East River. Visitors can walk its length and pick out a series of historic and architectural landmarks on the ground: the New York Stock Exchange building, on the corner of Broad Street, home to the world's largest stock exchange by market capitalisation; the Federal Hall National Memorial (26 Wall Street), built between 1833 and 1842, once a customs house and sub-treasury and today a national monument, on whose balcony George Washington was sworn in as the first President of the United States in 1789. Along the street stand Gilded Age skyscrapers with ornate façades, including 1 Wall Street (1929–1931), 14 Wall Street (1910–1912), 23 Wall Street (1914, once J.P. Morgan's headquarters, still showing cosmetic damage from the 1920 bombing), 40 Wall Street (1929–1930, once the tallest building in the world), 48 Wall Street (1927–1929) and 55 Wall Street (1836–1841, once a customs house and later headquarters of the National City Bank). Alexander Hamilton and Robert Fulton are buried in Trinity Church's cemetery. The street has three subway stations and a ferry stop, and its layout follows the line of the New Amsterdam palisade, removed in 1699.
