Trafalgar Square
Trafalgar Square is a public square in the borough of Westminster that commemorates the British naval victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The architect John Nash planned to clear the site in 1826; Charles Barry carried out the final design and the square opened to the public in 1844. In the centre stands Nelson's Column, from 1840-1843, with a statue of Admiral Horatio Nelson carved by Edward Hodges Baily on a Corinthian granite shaft; at the base, four bronze reliefs cast from captured French and Spanish cannons depict as many naval battles. Four bronze lions by Edwin Landseer, installed in 1867, guard the column. The current fountains, from 1939, replaced Charles Barry's originals. Of the four corner plinths, three hold fixed historic statues and the fourth, the Fourth Plinth in the north-west corner, has displayed contemporary artworks that rotate periodically since 1999.
