Pont des Arts

The Pont des Arts is a pedestrian bridge over the Seine linking the Institut de France with the central courtyard of the Louvre Palace, allowing visitors to cross between the two banks in the heart of Paris. From the bridge, there are panoramic views of the Île de la Cité, Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Orsay Museum, the Institut de France and the Pont Neuf. For years the bridge was known for the custom of couples attaching love padlocks to its railings and throwing the key into the river, although the railings have now been replaced with glass panels and temporary street-art exhibitions. The Pont des Arts is popular with painters, artists and photographers who take advantage of its location and view over the Seine, and in summer it is common to see people picnicking on it.
