Palais de Chaillot
The Palais de Chaillot sits at the top of the Chaillot hill, facing the Eiffel Tower, and is arranged in two curved wings of 195 metres separated by a broad esplanade open towards the Trocadéro gardens. Built for the 1937 Exposition Universelle, the complex combines pavilions in a modern neoclassical style with a terrace viewpoint over the Seine. Inside are the Musée de la Marine and the Musée de l'Homme in the south wing, and the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine in the east wing, from where you reach the Théâtre National de Chaillot, located beneath the esplanade. The façades carry quotations by Paul Valéry and sculptural groups, and eight gilded figures line the Terrace of Human Rights. The central esplanade, called the Parvis des Libertés et des Droits de l'Homme, commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the palace in 1948.
