Freud Museum London
The Freud Museum occupies the house at 20 Maresfield Gardens, in Hampstead, where Sigmund Freud lived his last year after fleeing Nazi Austria in 1938. There he continued seeing patients and finished “Moses and Monotheism”, of 1939. His daughter Anna died in 1982 and the museum opened to the public in July 1986. It preserves the furniture the family brought from Vienna, the psychoanalyst's collection of antiquities and his library, with works by Goethe, Shakespeare and Heine. The central piece is the psychoanalytic couch given to him in 1890 by a patient, Mrs Benvenisti. The visit includes an audio guide that can be downloaded to your phone, and the museum stages contemporary art exhibitions. The nearest stations are Finchley Road, a five-minute walk away, and Hampstead, ten.
