Basilica of Saints John and Paul
Zanipolo, as the Venetians call it, is a large Gothic brick church in the sestiere of Castello, built by the Dominicans from around 1250 and consecrated in 1430. It is about 100 metres long and is one of the largest in the city. It serves as the ducal pantheon: 25 doges were buried here, among them Jacopo Tiepolo, Tommaso and Pietro Mocenigo, Andrea Vendramin and Sebastiano Venier, and after the 15th century the funerals of all the doges were held in this church. In the south aisle is Giovanni Bellini's polyptych of St Vincent Ferrer and in the south transept, St Antoninus Giving Alms by Lorenzo Lotto. In the Rosary Chapel there are works by Veronese. In the square beside the church stands the equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni, by Verrocchio (1483).
