St Thomas Church
St Thomas Church (Thomaskirche) is a Lutheran church located in the centre of Leipzig. The current building, consecrated in 1496, is an example of late Gothic architecture, with a nave 50 metres long and a roof pitched at 63 degrees. Its tower is 68 metres tall. Inside is the tomb of Johann Sebastian Bach, who was Thomaskantor between 1723 and 1750. The church has two organs: the Sauer organ, built between 1885 and 1889 and enlarged to 88 stops in 1908, and the Bach organ, built by Gerald Woehl between 1999 and 2000 with 61 stops. The set of bells includes eight historic and new bells, with a total weight of 10.8 tonnes. Notable works of art include a font from 1614-1615, a crucifix from Bach's time and stained-glass windows with historical motifs. The church is home to the Thomanerchor, a boys' choir founded in 1212, and regularly hosts motets, concerts and religious services. It also has a statue of Bach outside, as well as one of Felix Mendelssohn.
