Place Kléber
Place Kléber is the largest square in the centre of Strasbourg and the heart of its shopping area. At the centre stands the statue of General Jean-Baptiste Kléber, beneath which lies the vault with his remains. On the north side is the Aubette building, built by Jacques-François Blondel between 1765 and 1772, whose interior decoration from the 1920s, the work of Hans Arp, Theo van Doesburg and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, was restored and reopened to the public in 2006. Every year, in the south-west corner a large fir tree about 30 metres high is set up, where residents leave gifts for the poor, and during the Christmas market some fifty charities occupy the Village du Partage. The square forms part of the Grande Île, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
