Leipzig Riverside Forest

The Leipzig Riverside Forest (Leipziger Auenwald) is one of the largest lowland riparian forests in Central Europe and lies largely within the boundaries of the city of Leipzig. It covers around 30 km along the White Elster, Pleiße and Luppe rivers, with a width of 2 to 5 km, and is split into a southern and a northern section separated by a corridor of parks and green spaces along the Elsterbecken and the Pleißeflutbett. Since the late 1950s it has been a Landschaftsschutzgebiet (landscape conservation area), and several sections are Naturschutzgebiet (nature reserves). The area protected under IUCN criteria is 5,897 ha, of which 1,978 ha are managed by the city of Leipzig. The mixed forest still has old oaks with massive trunks and species such as ash, maple, sycamore maple, small-leaved lime, common hornbeam and various types of willow. In spring the forest floor is covered in wild garlic, spring snowflakes and corydalis in shades of white, pink and purple, and Geum rivale can be found in the wetter areas. Notable fauna include the common kingfisher, red squirrels and several species of woodpecker, such as the lesser spotted woodpecker, black woodpecker and green woodpecker. Some watercourses are closed to tourist boat traffic during the kingfisher breeding season.
