Heijō Palace was the political centre and imperial residence of Japan during the Nara period (710-784). Today it is an extensive archaeological site where you can see the foundations of the main buildings, such as the Daigoku-den (Hall of State), the Chōdō-in (ceremonial hall) and the Dairi (imperial residence). The Suzaku Gate, the palace's main entrance, and the First Daigokuden, the audience hall, have been rebuilt at full scale, with columns and beams painted vermilion and a tiled roof. The Tou-in Garden has also been restored, a Chinese-style garden from the early Nara period that was later modified to the Japanese style. The Nara Palace Site Museum displays the objects found in the excavations, such as utensils and wooden tablets, and explains the history of the palace. Visitors can walk around the site, view the reconstructions and grasp the scale of the ancient capital.
