Grande Arche de la Défense
The Grande Arche de la Défense is a monument and office building opened in 1989 in the La Défense business district, in Puteaux, west of Paris. Designed by Danish architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen and engineer Erik Reitzel, it takes the form of an open cube 110 metres on each side and closes the historic axis of Paris running from the Louvre to the Arc de Triomphe. Its construction was a major technical challenge: 300,000 tonnes rest on twelve concrete piles, and the upper platform was built with 110-metre pre-stressed mega-beams. The façade combines anti-reflective glass and Carrara marble, later replaced with granite. On the roof, open to the public, there is a viewpoint with panoramic views of Paris, a 1,200 m² exhibition space dedicated to photojournalism, an auditorium and a restaurant. Access to the roof was closed between 2010 and 2017 for renovation work and reopened after seven years of work.
