Sumida River
The Sumida River crosses central Tokyo for about 23 kilometres, from where it branches off the Arakawa River in Kita to its mouth in Tokyo Bay, passing through seven wards. It is crossed by 26 bridges, among them the Ryōgoku-bashi, which in 1932 replaced a bridge from 1659 and was depicted by Hiroshige, the Eitai-bashi (1924, on the site of one from 1696), the Senju (1921, on the site of one from 1594) and the Kachidoki, the river's only drawbridge. In summer the Sumida River fireworks are launched from barges between Ryōgoku and Asakusa, with an associated festival. The river also appears in kabuki and noh plays and in the literature of Bashō and Issa.
