Artola Dunes

The Artola Dunes, also known as the Cabopino dunes, are a system of fossil and mobile dunes declared a Natural Monument by the Regional Government of Andalusia, covering an area of about 19.2 hectares. They lie on Marbella's eastern coast, next to Cabopino Port, and are the last major remnant of Málaga province's ancient dune belt. Visitors can explore the site via wooden walkways that cross the dune system without damaging its fragile ecological balance, observing three distinct ecosystems: embryonic or primary dunes, fixed dunes and fossil dunes. The vegetation includes species adapted to strong sunlight and wind, such as marram grass, sea holly, sea daffodil and larkspur, the latter having a very limited distribution. Wildlife includes migratory birds such as the Kentish plover and the common tern, as well as reptiles such as the chameleon. At the end of the dune system stands the Torre Ladrones, a Nasrid-era watchtower from the 14th century listed as a Site of Cultural Interest, which formed part of the coastal defence system. The walkway also allows for birdwatching and landscape photography, and connects to the coastal path linking other nearby beaches such as Cabopino, Las Chapas and Elviria.
