Mount Wakakusa
Mount Wakakusa is a grass-covered hill 342 metres high, east of Nara Park. Visitors can walk up along paved paths, dirt tracks and wooden steps, with a climb of about 15 to 20 minutes to the first viewpoint and 30 to 45 minutes to the summit. From the top there are panoramic views of Nara, including Todaiji Temple, Nara Park and the city. It is a popular spot for sunset and night views, although you must enter before the gates close at 5:00 p.m. Deer can also be seen on the slopes. On the fourth Saturday of January the Yamayaki festival is held, in which the dead grass on the mountain is burned, a spectacle visible from the city.
