Bom Jesus do Monte
The sanctuary is visited by climbing a hill up a Baroque zigzag staircase of 583 steps that covers a 116-metre rise. Along the ascent there are sections with Stations of the Cross chapels decorated with terracotta sculptures of the Passion of Christ, fountains representing the Five Senses and the Three Theological Virtues, and at the top a neoclassical church by Carlos Amarante with the main altarpiece dedicated to the Crucifixion. Behind the church, the Terreiro dos Evangelistas has octagonal chapels and four Baroque fountains with statues of the evangelists. To get up you can use the Elevador do Bom Jesus, a funicular from 1882 that still operates.
