Yūshūkan

The Yūshūkan is a military and war museum located within Yasukuni Shrine in Chiyoda, Tokyo. Founded in 1882, it is described as Japan's first and oldest war and military museum. Its exhibits focus on the Imperial Japanese Army and its weaponry, with artefacts and documents ranging from the Meiji Restoration to the end of the Second World War. On the ground floor, which is free to enter, an A6M Zero fighter, a C56 31 steam locomotive used on the Thailand–Burma Railway, a Type 89 gun and a Type 96 howitzer are on display. The large exhibition hall contains a Yokosuka D4Y bomber, a Type 97 Chi-Ha tank recovered from Yap Island, a Kaiten torpedo and replicas of an Ohka Model 11 aircraft and the battleship Mutsu. There is also a room with kamikaze mementos, letters and portraits. On the second floor, wartime materials are displayed in chronological order, including swords, armour, weapons and a gold war flag from the Boshin War era. The war flag of the Imperial Japanese Army's 321st Division is the only one recovered fully intact. The museum also has a café with a menu based on ingredients and recipes from Japanese naval ships, and a gift shop selling regional souvenirs, books and documents on Yasukuni Shrine, as well as military toys and English-language leaflets. The museum has been the subject of controversy for its historical revisionism and for glorifying Japan's militarist past.
