Edo Castle
Edo Castle, also known as Chiyoda Castle, was built in 1457 by Ōta Dōkan and became the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate and residence of the shoguns during the Edo period (1603–1867). Today it forms part of the Tokyo Imperial Palace and retains moats, walls and some original gates. The grounds once had a perimeter of 16 km and included the present-day sites of Tokyo Station and Marunouchi. Visitable features include the foundations of the main keep (tenshu-dai), the Kitahanebashi-mon gate with the fittings of its former drawbridge, and the East Gardens (Higashi-Gyoen), a public park since 1968. The area is a historic site designated by the Japanese government, and many Tokyo place names derive from its gates and moats.
