Arco de la Victoria
The Arco de la Victoria, also known as the Arco de Moncloa, is an imposing 49-metre-high triumphal arch built between 1950 and 1956 in the Moncloa-Aravaca district. It stands on a rectangular base measuring 130 by 42 metres and is topped with a seven-metre-tall bronze quadriga of Minerva. Its neoclassical frieze, the work of Moisés de Huerta, contains 34 allegorical figures representing military virtues and academic disciplines, accompanied by Latin inscriptions commemorating the Francoist victory and the reconstruction of the Ciudad Universitaria. The arch is unique in having been erected on the very battlefield of the Ciudad Universitaria, an unprecedented feature for a triumphal arch. Visitors can view the structure from the outside, examine its reliefs and inscriptions, and enjoy panoramic views of Madrid and the Sierra de Guadarrama, especially at sunset. Access is free and open 24 hours. The monument has wheelchair access and adapted parking. It is recommended to combine it with a visit to the nearby Faro de Moncloa or the Museo de América.
