Bay of Santander
The Bay of Santander is the largest estuary on Spain's north coast, with 22.42 km² of water surface. Its entrance is preceded by the El Sardinero inlet and the island of Mouro, and access to the interior is through a narrow passage between the Magdalena peninsula and the El Puntal bar, a long strip of beaches and dunes that protects the calm waters. Municipalities such as Santander, Camargo, El Astillero and Marina de Cudeyo line its shores, and several estuaries flow into it, including that of the Miera. The bay is home to a great diversity of waterbirds and seabirds, fish, molluscs and crustaceans, and in some areas of high ecological value salt marshes have been recovered and reintegrated into the tidal dynamics. It belongs to the international association of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World.
