Chester Zoo is a 51-hectare zoo in Upton-by-Chester, England, home to more than 30,000 animals of more than 500 species. Founded in 1931 by George Mottershead, it was a pioneer in designing zoos without iron bars, using moats and ditches to separate the animals from visitors. The zoo is divided into colour-coded zones to make navigation easier and includes immersive habitats such as Heart of Africa, the largest zoo habitat ever created in the United Kingdom, with 22.5 acres of African savannah and 57 species; Islands, which recreates six island habitats of South-East Asia; and Monsoon Forest, the largest tropical biodome in the United Kingdom. Visitors can explore more than 10 indoor habitats and five adventure playgrounds, and enjoy a boat ride along the Lazy River in Islands. The zoo also has award-winning gardens, daily keeper talks about the animals, and experiences such as feeding the Humboldt penguins or meeting the okapis. As a charity, every ticket contributes to the conservation of endangered species around the world.
