Marseille History Museum
The Marseille History Museum, next to the Vieux-Port and around the archaeological site of the ancient harbour, allows visitors to discover 26 centuries in the life of France's oldest city. It holds a flagship exhibition of 3,500 m² with around 3,000 works, including finds from the site itself, such as the hull of a 2nd-century AD ship considered the best preserved of its era, as well as pieces on prehistory, Greek and Roman Marseille, early Christianity, medieval potters' workshops, the Great Plague of 1720 and the architecture of Pierre Puget. The museum opens onto the Jardin des Vestiges, an open-air garden with stabilised archaeological remains including classical walls, harbour buildings and a necropolis. It also has space for temporary exhibitions, a documentation centre, a library and an auditorium.
