Canebière
La Canebière is a historic thoroughfare, a kilometre long, in central Marseille, linking the Réformés church with the Vieux-Port. Originally a hemp field, it was developed in 1666 under Louis XIV and became the city's commercial and social hub, with notable buildings such as the Palais de la Bourse (1854) and hotels like the Hôtel du Louvre et de la Paix, listed as a historic monument in 1982. Along its length stands Marseille's Kilometre Zero, marking the starting point for distances to Paris, and the Monument aux Mobiles (1894) in front of the Réformés church. The street has witnessed historic events such as the installation of the guillotine during the Revolution, the assassination attempt on King Alexander I of Yugoslavia in 1934, and the fire at the Nouvelles Galeries in 1938. Today, served by tram line T2, it is a boulevard combining heritage, commerce and city life, with Rue Noailles and the Allées de Meilhan incorporated into it since 1927.
