Place Castellane
Place Castellane is a historic square in Marseille's 6th arrondissement, built in 1774 after the land was donated by Henri-César de Castellane-Majastre. At its centre stands the Jules Cantini fountain, sculpted between 1911 and 1913 by André-Joseph Allar in Carrara marble, depicting Marseille atop a column with the Durance, Gardon and Rhône rivers represented as allegorical figures. Before the fountain was built, the square held an obelisk that served as a public washhouse, which was moved to Mazargues in 1911. The square is mentioned by Joseph Conrad in his novel The Arrow of Gold. Today it is a transport hub where two lines of the Marseille Metro cross and where tram line 3 terminates.
