La Magdalena Peninsula
The La Magdalena peninsula is a 24.5-hectare public park in Santander, open during the day, that is explored on foot among gardens and by the sea. It is home to the Magdalena Palace, the former summer residence of Alfonso XIII and now the seat of the Menéndez Pelayo International University, along with its gardens, which are listed as cultural heritage. Visitors can go down to La Magdalena beach and Los Bikinis beach, walk through the open-air museum 'El hombre y la mar' made up of three galleons by the Cantabrian navigator Vital Alsar, see the monument to Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente and enter a small free zoo with ducks, penguins, sea lions and seals. Events such as horse-jumping competitions and the Cantabria Children's Day are held on its grounds.
