Passeig de Colom

CultureVisit: ~45 minFree

Tree-lined avenue of a little over a kilometre running along the port between Plaza de Antonio López and the Puerta de la Paz, where the Columbus Monument stands. Its present layout dates back to 1878, when the old sea wall was demolished, and it was landscaped in 1887 with pavements, street lamps and a double row of palm trees that still characterise it. Along the promenade there is a succession of buildings of interest: the Casa Cervantes, traditionally linked to the writer's stay in the city; the Palacio Bru, listed as a Bien de Interés Local; the Capitanía General, with a Neoclassical façade from the 1920s; and the Gobierno Militar, at the junction with the Puerta de la Paz. On the seaward side, the Muelle de la Fusta was converted into an urban promenade for the 1992 Olympic Games, offering a pedestrian walk beside the water. The avenue works as a link between Las Ramblas, the old town and the port, and is a popular place to stroll, especially at sunset.
