Tower of Pisa
The Tower of Pisa is the white marble bell tower of the cathedral, built on eight levels: a base of blind arches and six storeys with open round-arched arcades, topped by a Gothic belfry. Inside, a helical staircase of 251 steps climbs to the top, where there are seven bells tuned to the notes of the musical scale, the largest cast in 1655. The building leans about 4° from the vertical, a tilt that began during its construction in the 12th century because of the soft ground and that was stabilised by works between 1993 and 2001. It is part of the Piazza del Duomo complex declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
