Fort (Mumbai district)

Fort is a commercial and artistic district of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The area takes its name from the defensive fort, Fort George, built by the British East India Company around Bombay Castle. It stretches from the docks in the east to Azad Maidan in the west, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in the north, and Kala Ghoda in the south. This area is the heart of the city's financial markets, and the neighbourhood is home to several buildings from the British colonial period. The Fort area was declared protected under the regulations of the Maharashtra Government's Urban Development Department. Today, an advisory committee oversees development, repairs and renovation of structures in the precinct. In 1882, the Bomanjee Hormarjee Wadia Clock Tower was erected with public funds as a token of gratitude to Bomanjee Hormarjee, a Parsi philanthropist who contributed to improving education in Mumbai. Mumbai's Fort neighbourhood was the first part developed by the British. Over the years it has remained a reminder of India's rich colonial history and is today something of a crown jewel of the city's cultural scene. The USTR listed it as a notorious market in 2009 and 2010 for the sale of counterfeit software, media and other products.
