East Berlin
East Berlin was the Soviet sector of Berlin from 1945 and the capital of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) between 1949 and 1990. Today, visitors can walk its streets and find a distinctive urban landscape: government buildings such as the Rotes Rathaus (Red Town Hall), which remains the seat of Berlin's municipal government, and avenues such as Karl-Marx-Allee, with its socialist classicist architecture that contrasts with the urban style of former West Berlin. Street and square names commemorating socialist heroes are also preserved, such as Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz and Karl-Liebknecht-Straße. An everyday symbol is the Ampelmännchen, the little hatted figure that appears on pedestrian traffic lights in the eastern part of the city. Altogether, this allows visitors to understand the history of the Cold War and German reunification through the city's urban fabric and architectural heritage.
