Rotes Rathaus

The Rotes Rathaus is the seat of Berlin's city government, located on Rathausstraße in the Mitte district. The building, constructed between 1861 and 1869 to the design of Hermann Friedrich Waesemann, is in a northern Italian Renaissance style, with a red-brick façade that gives it its name (Rotes Rathaus means "Red Town Hall"). Its tower was inspired by the towers of Laon Cathedral in France. After suffering severe damage in the Second World War, it was rebuilt between 1951 and 1956 following the original plans. During the division of Berlin, it served as the town hall of East Berlin, while the Rathaus Schöneberg performed that role in West Berlin. Since German reunification in 1991, it has housed the administration of reunified Berlin and is the seat of the governing mayor and the city's Senate. Visitors can admire its historic architecture and urban setting, although no specific tourist activities inside are documented.
