DDR Museum

The DDR Museum is an interactive museum in central Berlin that recreates everyday life in the German Democratic Republic. Visitors can explore a fully furnished Plattenbau flat, try a Trabant driving simulator, sit in a period cinema, and visit a prison cell, a surveillance room and an interrogation room. The exhibition includes more than 250,000 objects, with highlights such as an official Volvo 264 TE, a printing press from the Umweltbibliothek, and the mural 'Lob des Kommunismus' by Ronald Paris. The museum is organised into three main themed areas — 'Everyday Life', 'State and Ideology' and 'Life in the Tower Block' — spread across 35 modules. It is a hands-on museum where the experience is built through visitor involvement, with interactive installations such as a listening device that simulates surveillance and the chance to change channels on an old television set.
