Church of Santa Eulalia

Old-town parish church of medieval origin: tradition says James I founded it after taking Murcia in 1266, on top of a mosque. The current building dates from 1753 to 1766, one of the last examples of the city's Baroque-Rococo. The façade, drawn up in 1765, has a broken curved pediment, and the brick tower leans slightly. Inside, Pablo Sístori painted the architecture of the altarpieces of the main chapel and the transept in trompe-l'œil, and sculptures by Salzillo are preserved, including a St Blaise. Next to the church is the Chapel of San José, built by the carpenters' guild in the early 18th century against the Arab wall. In the same square, the Wall Visitor Centre shows, 3.5 metres underground, a stretch of the 12th-century wall, the 15th-century Puerta de Santa Eulalia and an Islamic necropolis from the 9th to 12th centuries.
