Church of the Sacred Heart

CultureVisit: ~30 minOpening hours: Horario de misas (el templo está abierto en ese horario): lunes a viernes 7:20,

A Jesuit church in the Plaza de San Ignacio de Loyola, beside Calle Compañía, right in the historic centre of Málaga and a step from the Villalón Palace. It is one of the few Neo-Gothic buildings in the city. The architect Fernando Guerrero Strachan designed it on commission from the Society of Jesus in 1907, the first stone was laid that same year and Bishop Manuel González García blessed it on 12 May 1920. It has a basilica plan with three naves with rib vaults, an octagonal crossing with a star vault and a choir in the central nave. The Gothic-style stained-glass windows are the work of the painter Apolo Párkinson Molinari. On the night of 11 May 1931 the church and the residence suffered a fire; it was renovated in 2010. It holds the green marble tomb of Father Tiburcio Arnaiz, called the apostle of Málaga.
