Barbican Centre
The Barbican Centre is part of the Barbican residential and cultural complex, built from 1965 on sites flattened by bombing in the Second World War, in the City of London. The complex, the work of the architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, is one of the most cited examples of Brutalist architecture in the United Kingdom, with towers and blocks raised on pilotis that surround an artificial lake and a network of elevated walkways (highwalks). The centre itself houses concert halls, a cinema, a theatre and art galleries. Inside, around the old fly tower of the Barbican Theatre, the Barbican Conservatory was built in 1984, the second-largest greenhouse in London, with more than 1,500 species of tropical plants spread over several levels and ponds with koi carp. The lakeside terrace, with free access, is one of the usual meeting points of the complex.
