On Rue du Bac in Paris stands the chapel of the mother house of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, the place where Saint Catherine Labouré said she had the visions in 1830 that gave rise to the Miraculous Medal. Inside, the incorrupt bodies of Saint Catherine Labouré and Saint Louise de Marillac, co-founder of the congregation, are on display, and the space receives daily visits from the faithful and pilgrims. The medal, designed by the goldsmith Adrien Vachette, spread widely from the 1832 cholera epidemic in Paris, and its iconography — the Virgin on a globe, the rays of light, the letter M with the cross and the two hearts — comes from the images described in those visions.
