The Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum occupies an Art Deco building completed in 1933, with interiors designed by Henri Rapin and glasswork by René Lalique. It was the residence of Prince Yasuhiko Asaka and his family from 1933 to 1947, then the official prime minister's residence (1947–1950) and a state guesthouse (1950–1974), before opening as a museum in 1983. The museum is surrounded by a Japanese garden with sculptures, and includes a teahouse and a garden map. After a major renovation, it reopened in November 2014 with a new annexe designed in collaboration with Hiroshi Sugimoto, containing modern exhibition spaces, a café and the museum shop. The venue offers temporary exhibitions, events, concerts, tea ceremonies and educational programmes, and has a shop, café and restaurant.
